So, this question comes up time and time again, and I got it on my formspring/Ask Me Anything page, so I figured I would answer and post it here as well.
Is there any way to determine the right size for you when buying online? Typically I fall between sizes, so I’ll go up one. Then I get the pair, try them on, and realize it’s twink sizing and give me perpetual plumbers-butt.
My advice on this is, as always, pay attention to the sizing information and advice that is given on the site you’re ordering from, or from the manufacturer themselves, and know you’re true waist size and the measurements across your hips and let those two dimensions guide you. Remember if you’re buying low rise, they sit right on the hips. Take everything into account, and if you’re unsure of a brand, try buying a pair on sale first to check out the sizing. Don’t pay attention to the size on the tag (S, M, L, XL, etc) and go with the size that they tell you reflects your waist. If you’re a S or a L, wear what’s comfortable. There are some lines out there that I wear an XS or S in and others I’m a L…it’s so not about what that tag says anymore, but what size the company says the waist size represents. I’m proud of the 31 I’ve worked my way down to…regardless of whether that makes me an XS or a L…
