This post is a bit different from our standard #GuestBulge posts as we posed our standard questions, and Redhorseboots sent along his narrative and pics to share with you. We decided to just post his long form response.
Hello Undies 101,
First, a little about myself. I’m a 54 year old heterosexual and live in the high Rocky Mountains. So far up that I am off the grid and the sewing machines run on solar. And, so does my entire house. I’ve been married, divorced and just finished a long term relationship. So now, alone in the mountains, I have set out to design the perfect pair of men’s thong underwear.
Why thongs? My ex-wife loved them. My ex-girlfriend hated them. As for me, why have men been sentenced to a life of horrible uncomfortable underwear. I’ve tried everything from tighty whities to Jockey bikini briefs. Most of my life settled on bikini briefs. I tried on a pair or two of boxer shorts but… absolutely no way! You spend a lot of time “adjusting” and on a hot day, stuck to one side or the other. Life is so much better when everything is held in place exactly where it should be. Once you get past some fabric securely tucked between your cheeks, you don’t even know you are wearing any underwear. Besides, with boxers or briefs, that is exactly where a whole bunch of fabric ends up anyway. I found the “learning curve” with thongs to be only a few days.
What got me into making my own underwear? I’m pretty good at making a two dimensional material fit around three dimensional forms. I have a room with 5 sewing machines. Leather is my favorite. However, in a quest to make the perfect pair of underwear for myself, I bought a new light duty dress machine with a lot of fancy features.
I went from having a couple pairs of “sexy” underwear in my drawer to having thrown out all but the ones I have made for myself. Currently, there are about 100 pairs of both thongs and g-strings in my collection. That is after having thrown out nearly as many in the research and development stage. Sure, I made a couple of runs to Victoria’s Secret out of curiosity. A couple of pairs from that experience feel pretty nice but they are designed for women. Of course, the fabric is incredible. I bought several pairs from one or another exotic novelty shops but they are “one size fits most” and certainly not designed to be worn all day. Those have taken a back seat to even my earliest attempts at a comfortable fit and stretchable fabric. I also have some “conservative” thongs that are store bought but I prefer a more minimal fit of my own design.
I ordered a few pairs of top shelf underwear from Amazon and found that I could still make a few improvements for my own personal fit. First, I eliminated any fold over seams or serged seams. I understand why they have the seams, it’s for speed in manufacturing. What I have been doing is for a truly custom fit. I have a 34″ waist and an average package. I have learned how to work the elastic and what fabric to choose in order to make a pair of thongs or g-strings move when the mood strikes you. That is certainly something that the “one size fits all” models do not do. I have considered developing a “cup size” if I were to go into production with a line of men’s thongs. All I have found on that topic is if you were to order some from the internet and they are mostly made overseas, “order one size up”.
Now that I know what kind of fabric I prefer, trips to the fabric store have become more frequent. There are always new designs and a full rainbow spectrum of colors. And, there is always the question “What are ya makin’?” I have gone from the standard reply of “knit stocking caps” or “face masks” to “sexy men’s thong underwear!” That seems to always leave a smile on everyone’s face that is within ear shot. I always have to make a pair for myself. But, I have now been building up an inventory, should interest develop.
I set out on internet searches looking to see how many guys wore thong underwear and what their significant other thought of them wearing such things. There is not a lot of information out there regarding the topic but thanks to Undies101, there is a good start. I also found a sub/reddit called “Straightguysinthongs”. Since that and other sub/riddits involve a camera and can surely satisfy anyone’s viewing pleasure, I thought, what the heck, I posted photos of some of my creations. It seems that there are a lot of people who like to “show off”. It’s kind of nice to have an outlet where just us average folks can show off.
As a young teenager, a friend’s dad made a comment. He asked, “Why do women get all the nice things like silky lace underwear?” and then we all laughed. He just left it at that. There were no replies on that day. Perhaps he was just joking, maybe not. A thought to ponder for the rest of your life. I finally settled on what I will be wearing under my street clothes from now on.
